Slate
Slate is formed through regional metamorphism (metamorphism due to heat and pressure). Being clay based, slate is a fine-grained rock that splits thinly and evenly. Variations in color are due to differences in content of minerals and organic matter.
Slate tiles are most commonly sold with the natural cleft finish. The cleft pattern and resulting variations in thickness, even within a single tile, are a distinctive characteristic of the tile. Slate can be honed to even its surface and give a shiny appearance, but it does not take a polish. Honed slate is the only slate that will have some consistency in thickness. It has been used for whetstones to hone knives, and as billiard table tops. It is appropriate for either exterior or interior applications as countertops, walls and floors, fireplace facings and roofs.
Slate tile floors offer the durability and texture that will enrich almost any room in your house. It is stain-resistant and low maintenance, and extremely durable. Installation is similar to other forms of tile.
